Pelvic Fertility Endometrial Thickness Scan
Our Pelvic Fertility Endometrial Thickness Scan is designed for individuals undergoing fertility treatment, including those preparing for a Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET) cycle either in the UK or abroad. This targeted transvaginal ultrasound assesses the endometrial lining (womb lining) to help determine whether the uterus is ready for embryo implantation and provides a basic assessment of the ovaries.
What the Scan Involves:
- Endometrial Assessment:
We measure the thickness and evaluate the appearance of the endometrial lining, looking for features such as a trilaminar pattern and sufficient thickness (typically 7 mm or more) to support embryo implantation.
- Basic Ovarian Review:
A brief check of both ovaries is performed to confirm they are in a ‘quiet’ state, meaning no active or dominant follicles are present—especially important in hormone replacement (HRT) cycles.
- Endometrial Cavity Check:
We check for the presence of fluid in the uterine cavity, which can affect implantation success.
- Endometrial Doppler Assessment:
In some cases, we may use Doppler imaging to assess blood flow to the endometrium, which can provide additional information about uterine receptivity.

This scan is performed by our qualified sonographers with extensive diagnostic scanning experience.
When to Book:
- This scan is usually performed between Day 10 and Day 14 of your cycle, or as advised by your fertility clinic.
- It should typically be done just before starting progesterone medication in a frozen embryo transfer (FET) cycle.
Who Is This Scan For?
This scan is suitable for:
- Patients preparing for a frozen embryo transfer (FET)
- Individuals on a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) protocol for fertility treatment
- Those needing a mid-cycle lining check as requested by their fertility clinic (UK or abroad)
Important Notes:
This scan provides a targeted fertility assessment and does not include a full follicle count or detailed egg reserve analysis. It is intended specifically to evaluate uterine readiness for embryo transfer, not general fertility status.
About the Procedure:
- Available to individuals aged 18 and over.
- We will begin the scan abdominally. Following this, we will proceed with a transvaginal scan for greater clarity and accuracy. Your sonographer will request your consent before performing the transvaginal scan.
- Scan Length is 10minutes
Results: You will receive a clear, written report summarising your scan findings by email the next day.
Preparation for Your Appointment
- Hydration: Drink 500ml (1 pint) of clear fluid about 1 hour before your scan.
- Bladder Management: Do not urinate before your appointment to ensure the best possible ultrasound images.
- Dress in a two-piece outfit (e.g., trousers and a top or a skirt and a top) to ensure easy access to your abdomen.
